Day 6 – NanoPoblano – “My Blood, Flowers & Kisses” by David Ellis – A Found Poem Inspired by “Since Feeling is First” by E.E. Cummings

Hello there all you friendly people.

I am now on to Day 6 of NanoPoblano and for my found poetry/blackout poetry exercise today, I am reaching out for inspiration to yet another celebrated poet with hundreds of poems to their name.

My poetic found partner in crime this time round is none other than Edward Estlin Cummings and I have selected from his repertoire “Since Feeling is First” by E.E. Cummings over at Genius lyrics.

Also for your convenience, here is the entirety of his poem below:-

“Since Feeling is First” by E.E. Cummings

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;
wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don’t cry
—the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids’ flutter which says

we are for each other: then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life’s not a paragraph

and death i think is no parenthesis

Finally, here is my found poem for your viewing pleasure – hope you enjoy it.

“My Blood, Flowers & Kisses” by David Ellis

Feeling is any attention to things
Kiss wholly to be Spring in the world
My blood and kisses
Are a wisdom I swear by
Flowers – the best gesture which says
“We are for each other”
Laugh, for life’s not a paragraph, death is

  1. you really are good at this found poetry.. love this and e.e.cummings.. I am inspired to attempt found poetry. Off to try it now.

    • Thank you Namy, that means an awful lot to me 🙂 It certainly is an inspiring gift if you focus for a month of writing like this to focus on one particular theme or technique. Normally I will hunt around for prompts but I think this is the first month that I have had an incredible amount of material to work with, which has given me a lot of clarity on where to take this month and the book of these poems I will be compiling afterwards. In this case, I’m going through as many classical poets and poems as I can get my grubby little hands on! I still can’t wait to see what other poetic gems crop up throughout the month, each day is another exciting new adventure to explore 🙂
