Day 26 – NanoPoblano – “See A Dream Within” by David Ellis – A Found Poem Inspired by “A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allan Poe

Hello to you one and all, welcome, welcome!

My month long found poetry marathon for NanoPoblano has now reached Day 26 and I’ve been itching to feature one of my all time favourite poets.

I’m sure everyone is very familiar with Edgar Allan Poe and in particular his poem “The Raven”. It’s my favourite one too, especially when read by Christoper Walken and James Earl Jones, it sounds melodious.

However, I have actually previously written another type of poem based on “The Raven”, which will be featured in an upcoming poetry book collection that I am currently compiling, therefore I have selected a different Poe poem as my foundation poem (what a tongue twister that was).

Here are the lyrics to it, along with other Poe poems over at Poetry Foundation.

Also, since Edgar’s poem is in the public domain, I will therefore post it here below for your convenience.

“A Dream Within a Dream” by Edgar Allan Poe

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow —
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand —
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep — while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

And now, here is my poem based on the wonderfully crafted words of Edgar Allan Poe, thank you for reading and hope you like it.

“See A Dream Within” by David Ellis

This kiss from you now
You are my hope
A vision
Gone but within a dream
The roar of the golden few
Yet, how they creep
Through fingers to the deep
Grasp tighter
Save one from the wave
See a dream within
