NaPoWriMo 2019 – Day 18 – “A Piercing Comfort” – A Found Poem Inspired by “I Measure Every Grief I Meet” by Emily Dickinson

Hey there folks.

Welcome to Day 18 of National Poetry Writing Month over in this realm of poetic wonder and endeavour.

The Day 18 prompt over at NaPoWriMo.net HQ was to write a poem that communicates grief and sadness in a physical way.

If you too would like to play along, here is the link to the prompt itself.

NaPoWriMo.net – Day 18 prompt

In order to explore grief and loss themes, I picked a poem as the inspiration for my found poem that communicates these emotions very powerfully. I used “I Measure Every Grief I Meet” by Emily Dickinson as my inspiration and you can find the lyrics to it here:-

And now here is my own found poem, thank you for reading.

“A Piercing Comfort” by David Ellis

Measure wonder

If it weighs or has size

Tell old pain

If it hurts to live

To try to smile a little

When years could go on aching

With love grieved

There is but one sight

Of the kind

Comfort affords in passing

To note how worn some are
