Hey there everyone.
Far be it from me to stand in your way before another exciting weekend kicks off but before you run away screaming for joy at the top of your lungs, I have another treat for you to savour, this time with an author who has penned many different books in a variety of genres.
It gives me the greatest pleasure of introducing to you all multi-genre author Robert K. Swisher Jr. Let’s hear what he has to say and as always, enjoy the show, have a fantastic weekend folks.
Hi there Robert, thank you for being here to talk about your amazing stories and helping us to get to know you better as an author.
Thanks for having me.
Let’s start with your novels themselves. You have quite a few of them across multiple genres, including Young Adult, Historical, Mystery, Fantasy, Western, Crime and thrillers! Please give us a brief description about each of your works and their themes, their story arcs and the overall premises sitting behind them.
In the mid 60’s, I starting writing poetry and after placing several hundred and getting a dollar each I wrote short stories. I placed many short stories within literary magazines. I then started writing novels – modern novels set in the west. I was lucky and placed four with a small publisher in New Mexico. Now after 45 years, I have placed 18 traditionally published novels and I have 8 indies published too. They are on my website and Facebook Author Page.
Out of all of the genres you have written in with your books, which one is your favourite and what particular qualities do you enjoy the most about it?
I have several ideas at a time and when I start a book after a few weeks I know if I can finish it or not. I have several I have been working on for over five years. I think the book picks me not the other way around.
If any of your novels were to be made into films (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?
My novel THE LAND was optioned for 3 years but they could not raise the millions to do the movie. I could see myself playing the lead.
What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?
For me there is nothing easy about writing – maybe typing the title – the rest is work.
Who are some of the authors and historical figures that inspire you?
I read everything – chick lit, mysteries, humor, horror, westerns, non-fiction…but for all time I would have to say Marquez – author of 100 YEARS of SOLITUDE
What sort of research do you do to write your books?
I have lived my books.
Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?
I write because it is all I ever wanted to do – to keep my addiction I have held over 60 part time jobs not counting a stint at teaching a writing class that goes against the grain of what most writers are taught. Part of the class is in my next book GRAMMAR NAZIS ARE NOT ALWAYS WRITE…
What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?
Bourbon and good beer.
You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Do not be in a hurry to get published.
How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?
I like to fish and my wife & I enjoy going on train trips.
Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?
I mentioned the writing book but I have one be edited about an old cowboy riding around a modern ranch talking to his horse that goes from WWII to now – epic. And I am working on a sequel to my sarcastic fill in the blank book VENT – which to toot my own horn was just reviewed by Midwest Book Review (a funny sarcastic look at modern life).
Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?
Don’t give up, writing is not an easy game, and write what you enjoy writing.
And that’s a wrap! Thanks for stopping by Robert and giving us the heads up on your writing craft, we look forward to exploring your works further across all of your many genres 🙂
