NaPoWriMo / GloPoWriMo 2018 – Day 20 – “The Confidence To Rebel Against Yourself” by David Ellis

Hey there everyone.

So, the Day 20 official NaPoWriMo HQ prompt is about being a rebel.

Well, if you think I’m going to follow that prompt Sonny Jim, you’ve got another thing coming…

Wait…does this mean I’m rebelling? Yes, it does indeed. I’m rebelling against doing the prompt, which in essence means that I’m doing the prompt by not doing it!

(Try holding that up in a court of law).

Hmmmm – can’t think of any other prompt to use…

Guess I will rebel against myself rebelling and do the prompt anyway.

Off we go then.

“The Confidence To Rebel Against Yourself” by David Ellis

Discipline is tough for a guy who procrastinates for breakfast

My greatness weakness is that I will do the opposite of what you tell me to do

Because your reverse psychology tactics are just too damn irresistible

Conforming with a non-conformist confirms conspicuous contradictions

Stand up for what you believe in, unless you’re standing in a building with low ceilings

When you’re younger, you challenge authority figures just to try to look cool around fools

Yet the only fool you’re fooling is the fool who fools with other fools while outfooling themselves

Make a statement but not the kind of statement that involves blue uniforms, badges and donuts

Nobody puts me in a box, baby! The only thing going in a box around here is my cat because she loves boxes

I’m like Johnny Cash when I dress in black but man, it’s a million degrees outside, why did I do this and how could I be so stupid, why?

All those tiny acts of disobedience to my parents when they paid my rent, I guess I didn’t know what I was really against

They just seemed like giant nerds with glasses stopping me from enjoying myself

Exploring boundaries by staying up until 3am each night was extremely liberating but no wonder they hated me

Robbing them of their sleep in the best years of their life, no wonder they want grandchildren to get their own revenge

The next generation is always going to be at odds with the one before it

Thinking the previous one had it better than the last

With technology becoming so indentured into cultural norms

It’s going to be much harder to be mutinous towards a bunch of robots

So share ideas but don’t force opinions down people’s throats

Question the government if they are denying you of your rights

Search, doubt and wonder what this is really all about

Go a little nuts but stay focused

Whatever kind of firepower you’re packing in there

It’s not the size of your pants but how you wear them that counts

    • I’m glad you liked it so much 😀 And it is sincerely my pleasure to have the opportunity to share your pieces, since they always engage or impress me mightily 😀

    • Very kind of you to comment Barbara and love that you love the rebel in me and my piece 😉 I’m going to be linking to the rest of your poems while I continue to write my last few ones to make up my entire batch of thirty. I promise to read all of yours and comment accordingly once I am done, I prefer to read poetry when I don’t have the pressure on top of writing it every day too 🙂
