Poem / Poetry – “Be Your Own Inspiration”

Well hello there my intrepid readers and friends of this noble literary realm.

Next week is NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month) – eeeeek! Thirty poems in thirty days – heeeeeellllppp mmmmeeeeehhh Seymour! Is there still time to fake my own death? I’ll just pretend that I got lost in my local supermarket freezer aisle trying to choose between Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Peanut Butter Cups varieties and fell in, never to come out out again, only to be subsequently miraculously thawed out a month later after a falling flaming meteorite brushes past the earth. Plausible yet utterly pointless.

Yes I like that, let’s go with that!

“What’s that, Mother?” “You don’t think it is a good idea short changing my loyal readers like that?” “Well OK then, I guess you are right.” Grumble grumble rhubarb rhubarb….oh you’re all still here, oops!

Guess I should start limbering up then and what better way to do that than to write another poem based on a prompt from the creative ladies over at The Reverie.

The Reverie Journal – Renewal Prompt

So this one is all about renewal and what it means to me. And/or you.

Wait, who are you to tell me what to do? Say, what’s the big idea bub? Coming over here to my joint and bossing me around like you own the place, why I ought to sock you right in the jaw! This is my house, my crib, you’re in my world now see and don’t you forget it……..wait, where are you going? Come back! I’m sorry baby, I didn’t mean it, I just get so anxious when I don’t gets me spinach. And by spinach I really mean biscuits.

OK enough malarkey and tomfoolery, here is tonight’s poem – you’re very welcome! Feel free to comment below and tell me what renewal means to you. (With or without biscuits….alright I’m obsessed but as vice’s go, it’s pretty low on the scale!)

“Be Your Own Inspiration” by David Ellis

Sick of being my own worst critic
Rushing around like a frantic lunatic
Life unwinds at such a tumultuous pace
Make your mark or leave without a trace

So many times I’ve told myself
Don’t live the life of someone else
Just stay true to what matters most to you
Go wild, cut loose and experience renewal

Hearts and minds can feel confused and abused
When terrible events crop up in the news
It gets so much that we should all turn it off
Escape to create a world without conflict or hate

Be the rainbow that adorns the skies
When love’s involved, don’t think twice
Seize the mood and take your time
Fun shouldn’t come with a deadline

If you know what you want, just go for it
You’re taking a chance, not making a mistake
There’s a rhyme and a reason for everything
Settle for nothing less than perfection
Be your own inspiration

  1. I’m thinking the same. It doesn’t help I was pretty quiet this month. Too much mom duties. This will be my 5th year writing a poem a day. I keep surviving, somehow.
