NaPoWriMo / GloPoWriMo 2018 – Day 11 – “Retro Analysis” by David Ellis

Hey there friends.

Another day of catch up for NaPoWriMo. The prompt for this little excursion is to do with imagining writing a State of the Union speech or considering the future.

I found this video particularly relevant and inspiring when it came to writing to my poem 🙂

And now after that bit of funky hilarity, it’s time for the main event.

“Retro Analysis” by David Ellis

By the time we get around to thinking about the future, it has already become the past

So, I’m thinking that the future requires a rebranding exercise, perhaps

If we know every shape, every curve, every line in advance

We’ll get so bored, we might as well sleep on wooden floors and eat water sandwiches

Do we really care what happens in the future, so long as our experiences are positive?

Tiptoeing around every mystery that life presents until the time is right and secrets are revealed

There is elegance in a grand design that leaves signs to nourish an analytical mind

Rather than go through the motions, we should be determined to let off some steam…and then some!

If life is to have any kind of meaning then spontaneity needs to feed eager feelings

There is nothing more frightening than staying to the end, with no twists or turns in between

We may not be taken to every single place of our own liking

But if we stay true to ourselves, everything doesn’t have to be set out in stone

A scenic route brings out the best food, drinks, entertainment and tunes

And if anything goes wrong then we also get amusing little anecdotes to perform to our friends and family too

Whether we focus on science or the renaissance, electric cars or breathtaking works of art

If there is a future with graffiti everywhere scrawled over the sky, obscuring the haunting beauty of the moon and the stars

Alter the script and flip it into something more likeable, a romantic comedy with colours and textures that are bright and breezy

We have more in common with each other than we could ever know

You can’t change the past but to the future you can take with you an infinite amount of dreams and hope

By all means make plans but go easy on the finer details

Just a glimpse, a little taste is enough, be content to let the wonder of life’s plans for you unfold

  1. The perfect poem for me today. I woke up in a funk, was dwelling on the past, went along with someone’s plan to take a road trip, destination left open. Tried focusing on the present and beauty at hand, now have some nice photos to remind me of the day, which will be in the past when I see them in the future.

    • Awwww what a lovely story Lori, I’m so glad that I was there for you at the right time. Present, past and future collide in a myriad of inspiring and pleasurable ways but only if we focus on the moment in hand and don’t fret too much about the past, when it comes to anticipating positive outcomes and good things happening. Timing is everything, particularly when it comes to life events and perfectly soft boiled eggs 😉

    • TY so much for the comment Vandana. I’m glad you agree, the future is fluid and should keep us in a constant state of awe, ready to surprise us at a moment’s notice. We will enjoy it more if we go with the flow, enjoying each moment in the present and anticipating positive adventures to come in our lives.
