NaPoWriMo / GloPoWriMo 2018 – Day 12 – “Renewal” by David Ellis

Hi there.

It’s time for another classic dose of NaPoWriMo goodness. Today’s challenge is to have a pop at writing a ‘haibun’. I’ve never written one of these before, only haikus but I can’t resist anything that is served in a bun, so let’s tuck in 🙂

Also, since haibuns are a combination of a prose poem (which encapsulates an element of a travel snapshot) and a haiku (which is loosely linked to the subject matter) then I am already halfway through my bun before we have even begun, since I write plenty of haikus, so hopefully I should have this one done by tea time 😉

“Renewal” by David Ellis

I see it in the distance. I cannot contain my anticipation. I manage to remain calm, even though my heart and pulse are both pounding. I help a little old lady across the road and politely listen to a neighbour tell me about her son’s first day at school and how many friends he has made. I pretend to get a text then make my excuses and try to get closer to the magnificent building just round the corner. So many treasures reside in there that it is impossible to keep count. I wipe the glistening sweat off my brow and steel myself, for soon I will be bathing in knowledge that has been passed down through the ages. I will be able to enjoy the musty smells and leaf through pages like there is no tomorrow. And then I remember that it is Sunday. My brow is now wet again but not from sweaty exertion. Tears bathe my salty cheeks, as I run home with my tail in between my legs.

Wasted journey? No
