Hello my dear friends, colleagues, cats and dogs, let me hug you all….no, not you, just the last two. Thank you.
Welcome to Day 2 of NaPoWriMo and I can already feel the burn! But I will press on and I will survive, ho blimey yes, I will survive this sucker!
Today, I’m using a rather strange prompt based around Norse Mythology, as supplied by the official National Poetry Writing Month website – check out the link here if you would like to participate, there is always time to catch up and join in the fun:-
Today’s poem is also kind of an ode to the band Monster Magnet too (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Magnet), as the brilliant Dave Wyndorf uses cosmic metaphors in their groovy rock music.
So swing your hammers like the Mighty Thor and embrace my lines as we ride into battle – comments are of course always welcome, even if you want to just throw a plate at me or raise a glass to victory!
“Modern Ragnarok” by David Ellis
Sparks set the world ablaze
Icy claws freeze the sun
Blinding us with a golden haze
Dreams of death bring wisdom
Only the strongest tales survive
Built from foundations of flesh and bone
Azure oceans froth and writhe
Crashing wildly into the unknown
Bestowing a name to our pain
Ancient myths and prophesies
Retreating off this terrain
Fighting against past mistakes
Pursuing knowledge from the Gods
Moving mountains with ease
Time and elements collide
The land is fertile and green
As our scars run deep
We must embrace our fate
Don’t be a source of war
Let go of all your hate
We may be friends, lovers or foes
You play your part in a bigger design
As we kiss the glowing stars
The light that fills us tastes divine
Calm the angry fires in your heart
Dare to soar on the crest of emotions
Love like there is no end in sight
Explode with compassion, affection and devotion
Take roots and stand firm
Born a wolf, die a righteous person

Powerful and tender at the same time… but you told me I could swing my hammer in the house and I broke a lamp and I am totally blaming you for it when my wife gets home…
Oh I see, first it’s the lamp then before we know it I’m being tazered for the murders of JR and JFK. Typical.
But you told me to do it.
I’d like to see you prove it in court.
uh… you wrote it… out loud
Whoops! My bad.
It will stand up in court
It needs to sit its five dollar ass back down before I make change.
If it stands up in court for more than 5 hours, call a lawyer immediately…
Or alternatively reduce the viagra dosage. Oh dear, I went there….
I went there first… you just stole it from me…
I don’t steal anything. I misplace, I misappropriate and occassionally I may borrow basic form, structure, the joke, the punchline, his little fuzzy hat and mittens, his dog for walkies and the kitchen sink but I definitely do not sell government secrets on for donuts. Glad we cleared that up.
Good things to know…
Hey there Dawn, what a lovely comment, thank you so much! It was an enjoyable experiment and another one that would no doubt go well with music in the future. Look forward to reading your work too 🙂
A great use of words to stir the emotions and perhaps the hammer wielding. Lots of memorable phrases including:
“Calm the angry fires in your heart
Dare to soar on the crest of emotions”
And thanks for directing me here from my post: R is for Ragnarok – http://rolandclarke.com/2014/04/21/r-is-for-ragnarok/ – in Blogging from A to Z April Challenge
Hey there Roland, thanks for replying. Your blog post makes an excellent complement to my poem and I will be sure to link to it in the main post too. Have a great day 🙂
