Author Interview – Kristy Brown – Fantasy Series Keira’s Quest

Howdy folks.

Welcome to another amazing installment in the Author Interview Series.

For tonight’s entertainment, may I present author Kristy Brown, as she whirls us away into the fantasy world of Keira’s Quest, along with discussing her inspirations and writing advice.

Here we go to the interview, where fun, excitement and adventure awaits.

Hi there Kristy, thank you for being our guest here today, I’m sure we are going to have a magical time learning more about you and your addictive books.

Let’s start with your fantasy series Keira’s Quest. You now have four books in the series on the table for us to tuck into. Please tell us how Keira’s story arc has evolved over the course of the four novels and where you see the series heading for the future, along with a quick recap of her challenges and adventures that Keira has faced so far.

Kiera starts off being a quiet, girl who is lacking in confidence. She lives with her uncle, never really knowing much about her real parents. Kiera is thrown into another realm when a mysterious doll turns up in her life, little does she know that the doll is a prince who is under The Witch Queen’s power. Kiera has to help save him before it is too late. Throughout the four books she becomes tougher, stronger. She and her band of rebel helpers have to face great evil and try and save another world.

What is your process when it comes to building the fantasy world, objects and characters that inhibit Keira’s magical kingdom? How do you go about choosing what magical elements you will include in your world and how do you decide on naming those things in her world?

Honestly, as these were my first books I took names of my friends and family and swapped them around to name new races and places.

For instance Terrence, the dog and shape shifter was named after my dad. My sister is Karen and I turned it backwards to Nerak and that named an entire species! There are so many fantastical parts to Kiera’s journey, some even came to me in dreams.

If your novels were to be made into films (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?

I always had Alex Pettyfer in my head when I wrote Zakk. I’ve never seen an actress that would be right for Kiera yet. I think Morena Baccarin from Gotham, would make an excellent Witch Queen and Peter Dinklage would be great as Googe.

What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?

The hardest must be getting the book noticed in the world. There are so many talented writers out there now! So networking takes up a lot more time than the actual writing does sometimes. The easiest is the characters, I always try and love my characters, even the nasty ones, because then the readers might love them too.

Who are some of the authors and historical figures that inspire you?

Hard question. I guess there are so many. I ‘m going to say J.K. Rowling, just because I know her back story and she had to fight for everything she has. She is an inspiration to all writers not to give up when all those rejections flood in. I used to do acting and once played Anne Frank, there are no words for her courage and bravery. I could list more, but I wouldn’t know when to finish.

What sort of research did you do to write your books?

As they are fantasy, it’s more imagination than research.

Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?

I wanted to act when I was younger and studied that at University. I never stopped writing poetry and short stories though. Then when I had my first son I decided to write a short story, which became the very first chapter of Kiera’s Quest. I write because It makes me happy.

What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?

I know writer’s block well! But I try to sit in a quiet space with a coffee and let myself day-dream. Often a scene or a bit of dialogue pops into my head.

You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Always do what you want to do and never give up.

How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?

I spend time with my kids, family and friends. I’m lucky to have some amazing friends. I like reading, obviously, and watching films.

Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?

I have written two books in a YA paranormal trilogy, which I’ll be thinking about sending to a publisher soon. I’ve just completed a YA contemporary romance book, “Just Sam.” Which will be free to read on Swoon Reads shortly.

Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?

If you believe in your story, someone else will.

And that’s a wrap! Thank you for taking us on Keira’s Quest Kristy, we can’t wait to check out the world of your books 🙂

Thanks for having me.
