And now for the main event, let me introduce you all to author, poet and teacher Shawn L. Bird, as she gives us intriguing insights into her writing life.

Hi there Shawn, thank you for spending quality time with us to discuss your YA novel series and your poetry, along with your passions, influences and writing experiences.

I’m delighted to be here! Thanks for having me, David.

Firstly, let’s start with your YA Fantasy adventure novel series “Grace Awakening”. Please tell us more about your protagonist Grace, the plot and themes of the books themselves and what sort of journeys Grace will ultimately be facing across the course of the series.

Grace is weirded out by the attentions of an older student, Ben, who seems to think he knows her and that they should be together. Strange things are happening around her, ominous people are showing up, and Ben seems to know what it’s about, but he won’t tell her. It turns out, she’s lived several lifetimes before. Other books in the series will be from different characters’ perspectives, and visit some of those past lives. It’s a backwards series!

You also have a noir Short Story collection due out in April 2018 via Coffin Hop Press called “Murdering Mr. Edwards: Tales from Canterbury High”. Please tell us more about the nature of these stories and how you came to write this particular collection.

By day, I’m a high school teacher. One day, I was pondering how my colleagues have quite particular sets of skills that, should they desire, could be turned to nefarious purposes. I asked them how they would murder someone using their area of expertise, and their ideas rolled out! Those suggestions became genesis of the short story collection.

When people hear this premise, they always chuckle. Teachers giggle, with the secret glee of having their own super powers, and students chortle because they always suspected their teachers were out to get them!

Each staff member’s tale has a different motive and method, but in every tale, odious Mr. Edwards is dispatched.

If any of your novels were to be made into a film (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?

I would love to see Sir Patrick Stewart as Mr. Edwards. Imagine him in a tatty tweed jacket and polka dot bow tie!

You also have published a couple of poetry books and regularly publish poetry on your blog at ShawnBird.com. Please tell us more about the titles of your poetry books and specific themes that unify the material in these collections.

“A Year in Love” is a collection of haikus exploring love through the seasons.

“2011” is a collection of my best work from the eponymous year. It’s full of musings on relationships, events, and snapshots of moments.

How does a poem begin for you? Does it start with an image, a form or a particular theme?

Every day is different. Some days I’ll be commuting to work along Shuswap Lake and I will see something that captivates, like the day I saw two crows walking down the double yellow line of the TransCanada Highway. As I drove along, I composed the poem “The Stroll:”

Like two hookers

in black vinyl trench coats

the crows stroll between the yellow lines

each watching the traffic

with one jaundiced eye.

Other days it’s a word, or I’ll have learned about a new form, or I’ll have been given a challenge by someone. It’s always different.

Are there any poetic forms you haven’t tried yet but would like to?

I’m sure there are! I come across new things all the time. There’s nothing at the moment, though.

How important is accessibility of the meaning of your poems? Should we have to work hard to “solve” the poems and discover their deeper meanings?

I really believe the poem belongs to the reader. What it means to me is irrelevant to the reader. What’s important is what it means to them. Every reader brings his or her own experiences to what they read, and that colours the meaning they find in a piece. I put poems out there, and then they don’t belong to me anymore.

It’s fascinating to hear how people interpret things. They’re often quite different from what I was thinking about when I composed the piece. I like that.

Has your own opinion or idea of what poetry is changed since you first started writing poetry?

I won my first poetry prize at age 9 (and got my first publication rejection letter at age 10, because my poem was ‘too mature’ for a children’s poetry magazine). I think poetry was about making sense of the world when I was a kid. Now, it’s more about celebrating the world, or playing with words.

I spent a week studying with Patrick Lane last summer at his Honeymoon Bay Poetry Retreat. That experience, listening to Patrick and the other talented participants was enlightening. Their skill at crafting profoundly emotional experiences for the reader was awe inspiring.

What would you choose as your own personal mascot or spirit animal when it comes to you and your style of writing?

Oh, probably a chickadee. I flit here and there, am around in all weather, feeding from many sources, and I’m friendly, chipper and content! I write a lot of things, learn from many sources, and like to mingle with other authors and poets.

What do you think most characterizes or defines your writing? Do you have any writing quirks or themes that constantly crop up in your stories?

Choice is a common theme in almost everything I write. We are responsible for our lives. We choose whom we love. We choose how we respond to things that happen to us. We craft our own happiness or misery. I’m working on a literary novel at the moment, and this is a major message in that one.

What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?

I am a night owl. I usually start writing at around 11 p.m. But I’m a teacher, who has to be in my class room by 9 a.m. each morning. During holidays, I write all night, and go to bed at 4 a.m. During the school year, I need to be in bed by midnight, which is right when some great idea hits! It’s a constant struggle.

The easiest thing for me is dialogue.

Who are some of your favourite authors, historical figures, musicians, poets and poems?

My favourite author is Diana Gabaldon. I’ve been so appreciative of all I’ve learned from her in workshops and conversations over the years. Having her pick apart her work and discuss her stylistic choices is so helpful! Also, she’s a night owl, too, so there have been some fun chats on Twitter in the wee hours!

The historical figure I have a secret crush on is Francesco Petrarca, the father of humanism (and a character in Grace Awakening).

Aside from Petrarca (who developed the sonnet form, you remember), I love the poet, Mary Oliver, but also BC poets Wendy Donawa, Sheila Rosen, and Barbara Pelman. A favourite poem would be Patrick Lane’s “The Bird.”

As far as musicians go, I like a lot of folk music, but I play the harp, and love listening to Sharlene Wallace’s playing. She is technically wonderful, but her compositions are also beautiful and evocative.

What sort of research do you do to write your books?

I have a good collection of books on Greek mythology and works of Petrarch, including a two-volume biography written in 1778. Owning hand-made 250 year old books makes my heart happy.

I spent 3 days in Avignon researching Petrarca for a book I’ve got in progress about him. My dream is to spend an entire summer at Fontaine de Vaucluse to finish up that project, but I think it will have to wait a few years. The day I spent there made me understand why he chose to live there: there is a magical aura about the place.

Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?

I started writing because I loved stories. I loved telling them, but I was an only child, so there was no one to tell them to. The career tests in high school told me to be a teacher or a writer. When I was doing my first teaching practicum I was so inspired by students around me that I wrote a (bad) novel about the boy I loved when I was thirteen. About two decades later, after reading the biographies of J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer, and meeting several authors at a BC Book Prize tour and learning none of them had started writing before their forties, I was inspired to get back to it. I wrote Grace in six months after reading the Twilight series. I had the epiphany to tell the story I wanted to tell with a fantasy component, in Grace’s case, Greek mythology. It fell into place like it was meant to be.

What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced it. I always have something creative in progress. I have so many projects on the go that I am never bored or without something to do.

You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?

1. Don’t eat sugar.
2. Go to grad school in your thirties.

How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?

Free time. Hmm. What’s free time? 😉

I read at least a hundred books a year. (Goodreads is great for keeping track of that!) I knit and sew. I also have a very precocious miniature poodle that I’m training. So far, he’s earned his Advanced Trick Dog title; we’re working on Free Style obedience and agility. I’m also a Rotarian, so I’m involved in considerable community service through that. In July, I start a term as club president, so I’ll be especially busy with meetings and paperwork!

Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?

I’m in a mentorship right now with Canadian literary author Gail Anderson-Dargatz to work on a literary novel project that explores the relationship between a couple in which one partner is mentally ill. I’m working on a non-fiction book on teaching poetry. I am compiling a year’s worth of Non-sectarian Invocations for use in Rotary Clubs. I have a few incomplete novels and some poetry collections lurking in the computer that I re-visit from time to time.

Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?

Don’t make excuses. Don’t believe any voice in your head that says you can’t do it. It takes time to develop your skills, the sooner you start, the better. As soon as you finish a project, start something new, because when you sell something, they’re going to ask what else you have. Also, hang around other writers. There are amazing conferences out there where you can meet people who understand about the voices in your head. Such connections will change your life.
