Hey there everyone.
Time for another amazing guest in the ongoing Author Interview Series.
It is with a huge amount of pleasure that I introduce you all to multi-genre author Rebekah Raymond, as she shares her writing experiences and we delve deeper into the world of her Mystery/Thriller/Fantasy series.
Thanks as always for reading and enjoy the show.
Hi there Rebekah, wonderful to have you over here to discuss your writing passions and your talent as a multi-genre author.
Thank you so much for having me.
Let’s start with your “Life Series”, where you have two books currently published – “Life’s Defeat” and “Life’s Hope”. Can you tell us a bit more about them both, the premise behind them, along with the series as a whole and how the events of the first book have lead on to the electrifying sequel.
The “Life’s Series” take place in a dystopian time where the government has abandoned support of the military after the failure of WW3. In response, the soldiers band together and employ genetic manipulation to make themselves strong enough for martial law.
Those who survive the procedure become able to self-heal, even to the point of resurrecting after their death. At least, until their genetic manipulation is exhausted and their bodies suddenly stop.
In “Life’s Defeat”, a soldier is abducted from the school she was raised and trained in. Brutally tortured and killed repeatedly by a sadistic criminal in search of the secret to her genetic superiority; she is eventually rescued and must decide how she will achieve revenge.
“Life’s Hope” is twelve years later. Tomlin is desperate to re-unite with our anti-hero, the soldier, when she returns after the death of their mentor and commander. But forces are tearing her apart, both physically and psychologically.
The “Life’s Series” is an exploration into the lives of these extraordinary people. Their intertwining relationships, their heartaches and terror, and the astonishing power of Life’s instinct to survive.
I also notice that you are a member of NaNoWriMo, in addition to the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society. Were both NaNoWriMo and the Writers’ Centre your main catalysts to encourage you to take the plunge to start crafting your Life Series?
I was challenged to join NaNoWriMo by a good friend. Yes, it prompted me to work on “Life’s Defeat” and flesh it out from a simple story to an entire novel, although I didn’t know at the time that I would pursue publishing it. Later I joined the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society, and it turned out to be an amazing resource. I don’t use it as much as I should but I hope to change that in the future. The connections I have made through the society has definitely propelled my writing further however.
If your novels were to be made into films (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?
Emily Browning for Seleah (the anti-hero soldier of “Life’s Defeat”).
Michael Fassbender for Tomlin (her love interest and co-main character in “Life’s Hope”).
Daniel Craig for Jakob StPatrick (their headmaster, commander and mentor).
Alfred Molina for Rochester (the villain of “Life’s Defeat”).
James McAvoy for Simonin (the villain of “Life’s Hope”).
What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?
For me, both questions have the same answer: the characters. Because I write by disassociation, the voices take over, and sometimes I find I can zone out, almost black out, for hours at a time. When I “re-awaken” I can then read what I dictated for them. Often, it is chilling. My people are tender, sometimes apologetic, but can also be horrifying and terror-driven. Sometimes it can be hard, knowing such words came from my own head. I try to be a good person. I believe in karma and balance and positive direction. So, writing a chapter where my protagonist is forced to repeatedly stab their lover until he bleeds out, or having another weigh the pros and cons of dying right now by bullet instead of later by an explosion, those can be terrifying to me.
However, I am only as proficient in my writing because my characters are so present in my head. My fellow writer friends often tell me how lucky I am to have so many voices talking at once, with such fleshed-out three-dimensional personalities. Seeing my friends struggle to put words to paper, I would have to agree.
Who are some of the authors and historical figures that inspire you?
I am inspired by the awesome gruesomeness of Edgar Allan Poe, the complex world building of Jacqueline Carey, the imaginative addiction of JK Rowling. I am humbled by the words of Maya Angelou and the dreams of Martin Luther King Jr. And there are so many Indies I have met and am proud to call my friends, who lift me up, who encourage and support me every day.
What sort of research do you do to write your books?
My “Life’s Series” is brutal, gruesome, gritty and real. It involves murders, violence, suicide, drugs, weapons. I used to go to google and search for everything I needed, but since writing the first book I have learned that first hand knowledge and education is key. So, I have befriended people with degrees in these fields, read article after article of first-hand encounters. I seek out help from soldiers in the army and people who do martial arts. For the last book I finished in which the main character becomes blind half way through, I even went as far as to blindfold myself and observe the sounds of hand to hand combat, then recruited one of the masters to punch me in the face so I could experience receiving it without seeing it coming.
Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?
I write because I have to. Like music, like art, it is in my blood. I create because I MUST.
I have been writing as long as I remember, but becoming published was on my bucket list. When my daughter started reading and writing and creating her own stories, when I saw the way she valued books the way I do, that was when I really decided I WAS a writer, that I had to be one.
What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?
Thankfully, I have A LOT going on in my head creatively, at all times. So, when I have a block with one book I can usually jump to one of the others and edit, or write in it, or research for it.
Fortunately (sometimes less so) my characters are the bosses when it comes to the writing. I have had the odd character who has fallen silent, or literally tells me he doesn’t want to add extra strain to my schedule by making me write (no need to name names, he knows who he is). In these cases, I have changed focus to a new project, another short story, or divert my attention entirely by doing another creative project until the block passes.
Having said that, I have also used methods in the past such as writing a letter to my character, sending emails to them, or pretending to interview them. This usually irritates them enough to make them talk again.
You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?
Stand up, speak out, go for it and ignore what others may think.
I spent far too long worrying about what others would think of me. I could have done some very amazing things if I had just trusted in myself more than in the thoughts other people never had a chance to have.
How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?
I love to create. I love to read. When I am not writing I either have my nose stuck on my kindle or in a paperback, or crocheting, painting, sewing. I make things for friends and family, craft with my children. Even when we are camping, something we do frequently in the summer, I always have ink and paper handy, my tablet with word, hooks and yarn nearby.
Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?
I have the next book in the “Life’s Series” with my editor right now. It is called “Life’s Inception” and chronicles the life of Jakob StPatrick, who appears in “Life’s Defeat” and dies during “Life’s Hope”. It is going to be a game-changer. Written like a memoir, it is the first book in the series that does not have a single discernible villain from the beginning. It spans his life from birth to death, so we see a dynamic change in StPatrick’s growth, maturity, and opinions on life and love and the challenge of being one of the soldiers.
There will be another three books in the series, two of which have been completed and the last is in progress. At the voices request I have also begun a spinoff story.
On top of that I am always working on short stories that I would like to publish in a collection, called “Half-baked Truths”. These are stories from my own life. Anecdotes of events, milestones, all altered slightly and infused with humour or poignant viewpoint made to make you think.
Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?
Write. When you stop, write more. Talk to other writers, connect with societies and fellow bookworms. Read, grow, learn you craft. Endeavour to improve, always. And remember, your name is on everything you put out there. So, make them polished. Edit, read, re-read, edit some more. Value your writing as how you value yourself. Then, you can’t really go wrong.
And that’s a wrap! Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself to us Rebekah, we can’t wait to see what twists and turns your series takes as we delve into your written world further 🙂
