Day Twenty-Eight – NanoPoblano – Poem/Poetry – “TRY A New BEAT, If You’re LATE Then Turn The PAGE” by David Ellis

Hey there all you rockers and rollers.

It’s my Day Twenty-Eight entry of NanoPoblano AKA National Blog Posting Month (but with a mischievous bunch of spicy peppery players known as Cheer Peppers) and I’m back with another video because I love you all (please, don’t laugh, I really do 🙂 )

Check out the Facebook Live performance of my latest poem.

For today’s poems (yes, multiple ones!), I decided to write more than just one because I went with another prompt that has a quite short form and it looked very interesting to attempt the little beast, which is called a “Clarity Pyramid”.

They consist of two sets of triplets and a single line at the end. The syllable count is 1,2,3 then 5,6,7 and 8 at the end.

I used a random word generator and cycled through it until I found words that I was happy to play the pyramid construction game with. With regard to the overall title of the poem, I brainstormed how to put all of the poem titles together (which are your keywords at the start of each pyramid).

If you have a four word title in mind (I personally think three or four of these pyramids are a good number to work with) that gives you multiple ways to express each of the words that you want to use, then I see no harm in starting with a title first and expanding each of the words into separate poems, since that is what you do with each individual poem in the first place, you work your way forward from the title word.

Also, you don’t have to do four of them, you can do one or as many of them as you like and string them together just like I have done, it is a very flexible form 🙂

For guidance on how to construct them (you really should, they are nice, simple and would appeal to fans of shorter forms like haikus, I’m looking at you The Illusion Of Controlled Chaos 🙂 ) then take a look at the link provided by those wonderful peeps over at Shadow Poetry:-

TRY a new BEAT, if you’re LATE then turn the PAGE” by David Ellis

TRY
effort
endeavour

Odds stacked against you
Agonising struggle
Sing the blues, come out fighting

“Always set one’s sights on the stars”

BEAT
rhythm
emphasis

Pulse, dance, transcendence
Soul sparks, swelling swiftly
Taken for rides of our lives

“Endless magic found in music”

LATE
delayed
last-minute

Panic, try to rush
Situations made worse
Focus, relax, release stress

“Time, unrelenting illusion”

PAGE
story
printed words

Rustling of paper
Makes hearts flutter, minds race
Journeys to worlds, we escape

“Stimulates imagination”

  1. Ha! Did you finally find the maximum word count for tags at the end of your posts, or did you write that last tag that way on purpose?

I will definitely be looking more closely into this form of poetry. 🙂

    • Lol I didn’t even notice that myself regarding the tag cut off. So I guess we have found the actual cut off point then, although not sure if that is for words or characters. I would imagine characters, since they cut the start of another word off. I was initially worried about messing around like this when I first started creating my ‘comedy tags’ but I’ve been doing it for years and no-one has said anything, so I will probably be OK. I just don’t want to wake up one day and find my account has been shut down because of my shenanigags 😉

Can’t wait to see what you come up with if you attempt the form itself too, both the tags and the clarity pyramid 🙂
