Hey there everyone, so good to see you all again.
I have another fantastic writer who wants to share their writing experiences with you and I can’t wait for you to get to know them more, especially as the currently have a Blog Tour going on for the third book in their epic Fantasy Series.
Just a quick note/Public Service Announcement before we get under way properly. I link to a lot of other articles in my posts, so WordPress users please check your Spam folders in your Setting Menus and approve any links/pingbacks that you find from me to improve the visibility of your own blog posts, as well as mine, it’s a win win for us both 😉
Please welcome Donna Migliaccio, as she gives us the lowdown on her fabulous tales, along with what motivates her to write and create.
Thanks for reading and as always enjoy the show friends 🙂
Hi there, Donna, a sincere pleasure to have you over here with us today to talk about your books and writing experiences.
Let’s start first with your novels themselves, “The Gemeta Stone” epic fantasy series consisting of “Kinglet”, “Fiskur” and the latest book in the series, “StoneKing”, which was just released on February 20th 2018. Please tell us more about their medieval plots and themes, their endearing protagonists and how the books link with each other in the series.
The series doesn’t really have a medieval plot or theme, although the setting reflects medieval and early Renaissance-era technology and societal structures. The main protagonist, Kristan Gemeta, is a gentle, compassionate young prince who, at the beginning of the series, must flee into hiding after his father is murdered and his throne taken by the Wichelord Daazna, a powerful magic user.
The books follow Kristan in his quest to recover his family’s talisman, the legendary Gemeta Stone, which protects the bearer from magic. With this Stone, Kristan hopes to defeat Daazna and take back his kingdom. Each book in the series takes its title from a nickname Kristan receives at that point in the story; for example, “Kinglet” is a name given to him by another outcast early in that book.
If any of your novels were to be made into films (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?
If I were to go strictly by appearance, Timothée Chalamet (of “Call Me By Your Name”) is the right age and has the right look for Kristan. But honestly, I don’t like spending a lot of time thinking about film or TV versions of my novels. If that were to happen, it would be great, but it’s not my main focus. I think you can give your readers a few details about your characters’ appearance, but also give them the leeway to visualize characters for themselves. That’s part of the fun of reading.
What would you choose as your own personal mascot or spirit animal when it comes to you and your style of writing?
I’m a weird combination of methodical and free-spirited when it comes to writing: I do lots and lots of research to make certain my writing has veracity, but other than that, I don’t do a lot of prep. For example, I usually don’t outline; I don’t draw up character description sheets and I only draw maps (the crudest of maps) when trying to puzzle out how long it takes my characters to get from Point A to Point B. So I suppose my spirit animal might be an owl – lot of observation and thought before plunging in.
What do you think most characterizes or defines your writing? Do you have any writing quirks or themes that constantly crop up in your stories?
I’m fascinated by the concept of inherited responsibility (such as those born into a royal family, or some other dynastic structure), and I’m always intrigued by characters who try to do what’s right, even though “what’s right” may stand in the way of their personal happiness (Elinor Dashwood from Sense & Sensibility springs to mind).
As far as quirks go: oh, I do love a clever turn of phrase, or the occasional unusual word. I’m not talking about smart-assery – characters who talk snarky to each other and use a lot of foul language usually bore me to death – but actual wit, spoken by articulate, intelligent characters.
What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?
The most difficult part of writing for me is the time aspect. I find if I have lots of time, I procrastinate. I do better when I have to carve time out of my day to write. For me, the easiest thing about writing is dialogue. I’m a professional stage actress with more than thirty years in the business, and I love writing dialogue that crackles.
Who are some of the authors, poets and/or historical figures that inspire you?
I love T.H. White’s combined whimsy and wistfulness, Margaret Atwood’s social awareness, Ursula LeGuin’s sharpness of vision, Terry Pratchett’s puckish sense of humor, Erik Larson’s careful research, Oliver Sacks’ extraordinary scope, Cormac McCarthy’s terseness and Anne Lamott’s soaring spirit.
What sort of research do you do to write your books?
Most of my research is done by reading, a fair amount of it online. But occasionally I need to experience something for myself in order to write about it. To that end I’ve taken both archery and swordsmanship classes, and I spend a lot of time tramping around in the woods looking at birds and other wildlife.
Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?
I write because I love words and I love to tell stories. I always wrote, even as a child, and I had originally planned to make my living as a journalist. That didn’t work out, and I ended up backing into acting, which has been rewarding. But my first love has always been writing.
What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writer’s Block?
I can’t say I’ve ever been blocked, per se. There have been long spells when I didn’t write because I wasn’t sure where the story was headed (I didn’t work on my series for nearly six months while I puzzled out how to get two distant groups on the same side of the world), but even during that time I was able to write short stories, blogs, etc.
You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?
You can plan all you want, but things change and life happens. Roll with it. And when you get knocked down, just get back up and keep moving forward.
How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?
When I’m not writing or at the theatre working, I read. A lot. I read more than 75 books last year. I’m also a birder, a nature observer and a weather watcher. I have red foxes visiting my backyard a lot these days and I’ve been keeping a log of their behaviour. It’s fascinating.
Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?
I have a short story coming out this spring in the Wild Musette Journal, and I’m in negotiations with my publisher, Fiery Seas, for Ragis, the fourth book in the Gemeta Stone series. I’m drafting the fifth and what I hope will be the final book in the series, working on a couple of short stories and writing on my website’s blog about my experiences as an understudy for the recent Broadway show “War Paint.”
Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers?
Read. For God’s sake, READ. A novel isn’t a movie or a TV show or a computer game. Writing a novel is a different discipline and requires a different skill set, and unless you read you’re never going to understand what that is. READ.
And that’s a wrap! Thank you for spending time with us, we can’t wait to see how your epic fantasy series continues to unfold and go from strength to strength 🙂
