Author / Musician Interview – Jackiem Joyner

Hey there everyone.

Welcome to another exciting and entertaining creative person interview!

Today, we are chatting to author and musician Jackiem Joyner about his latest book and music releases.

Jackiem is a celebrated saxophonist and composer, so it is wonderful to have him over here to discuss his passion for writing too.

Thanks for reading and enjoy the show folks!

Hi there Jackiem, a sincere pleasure to have you here today to discuss your books, along with your own passions, influences and writing experiences.

Let’s start first with your highly acclaimed Sci-fi novel “Zarya”. Tell us more about the plot and themes of your novel, along with giving us some background information on what is at stake for your protagonists and antagonists, plus providing us with an insight into the world that they inhabit too.

This book is my baby! It’s my debut Novel in a series of 3 books to be released. Being the critic I am with sci fi, I wanted to create adventure while also capturing the future in a more realistic way. Zarya is all about what an advanced civilization would really be like. More than just flying cars and drones and super advanced worlds.

The book touches on advanced computer systems that run networks of military and civilian planetary systems. The main character, Zarya, is a young teenage computer coder from a small town just outside of the main city “New Cebrenia. She has ears like and elf, a long tail, and an eye piece that helps her communicate with her airboard “Sochi”. Her eyepiece can also control other systems. As you might have guessed, this unwittingly makes her a threat to those in control. Her talent would need to be tamed. Silenced. But perhaps she’s just too smart for that!

Furthermore, you are also an accomplished saxophonist. Tell us more about your musical endeavours, what inspired you to become a professional saxophone player and what types of songs we can look forward to hearing on your albums, particularly on your latest release “Touch”?

“Touch” is my 7th International release. The album is all about romance! It’s perhaps one my most mellow albums filed with an R&B Grown & Sexy Vibe. The Single “Last Dance” featuring Peter White was a successful top 20 song on the billboard! Outside of this album, I will be releasing an extended play this fall. All about songs written and composed while in quarantine! I’ve been blessed to tour some 30 countries and perform with many great artist such as George Duke, Keiko Matsui, Donnie McKlerkin, and Marcus Miller to name just a few. Once the country opens back up I plan on hitting the road again. But I’ll have some books in hand to sell along with CDs.

If you could invite any literary characters to dinner, which one would it be and what would you cook for them?

I would invite Will Robie from the book “The Innocent”. I would ask him does he enjoy killing people as a profession? LOL I’d probably work up some spaghetti! I love the suspenseful writing of David Baldacci!

If Zarya were to be made into a film (or even a TV series), who would you cast in the lead roles?

Honestly, I’d prefer this story to be more of a CGI thing. I’d like the characters to be totally unique and colourful. Think the movie “Alita: Battle Angel” – with regards to CGI and you get the picture!

What would you choose as your own personal mascot or spirit animal when it comes to you and your style of writing?

A Killer Whale or an Eagle! I love freedom and adventure!

What do you think most characterizes or defines your writing? Do you have any writing quirks or themes that constantly crop up in your stories?

I’m always casting teens in my books. Not Sure why! But lately I’ve been writing more suspense and mystery. I love future tech and that’s always apart my stories!

What do you find the most difficult thing about writing? And what do you find the easiest?

Sometimes it’s hard to make sure things aren’t written and then missed. Little details about the story that needs clarification.

I find it easy to just keep writing and allowing my imagination to do whatever it wants!

Who are some of the authors, musicians, poets and/or historical figures that inspire you?

Musicians: Charlie Parker, John Coltrain, Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, John Powell, Steve Jablonsky, Hans Zimmer and a million more!!

Authors. Marie Lu, David Baldacci, Robert Kiyosaki, James Patterson, Karen Travis, Brian Tracy, Alison Goodman.

Do you listen to music when you are writing and if so, then what type of music do you listen to?

I do! I love to listen to movie sound tracks by composers like Hans Zimmer and John Powell.

What sort of research do you do to write your books?

I did tons of self-publishing research. I also search for historical contexts, cities, and laws. Also military history and functions. Weapons and how they work etc.

Why do you write? What inspired you to become a writer?

I first gave writing a shot while on a musical tour. I just simply started with a story and fell in love with it. The freedom I had while writing was just simply life changing. I could go any where I wanted. Do what I wanted. And literally be a God! There were no rules and that was intriguing to me to say the least! I will always write. It is a newly found passion and I love it just as much as writing music!

What keeps you motivated during creative slumps? How do you deal with Writers Block?

I try to commit to a set time every day. It can even be as short as 5 minutes. I’ll start with just one sentence. Or do some research. If I’ve already started the story, I’ll just start with cleaning things up. I find it easier to overcome writers block if I have some text to clean up or expand on. I also read before I write to get inspired.

You have access to a time machine. What advice would you give to your younger self?

As a writer: Create the outline first! You’ll finish much faster!! I’d tell my self to build good habits. Your momentum will work wonders. Better to write slow and steady than to not write at all!

How do you spend your free time when you are not writing?

I love the beach and I love hiking. I also enjoy adventurist video games, movies, and spending time with my daughter. She’s learning piano! And let’s not forget, writing music and practicing!

What are your views on audiobooks and would you consider having your novels made into audiobooks? If so, then who would you get to narrate them?

I love the old man British type voice and I love audio books! I’d probably have a similar narrator from England!

Tell us more about your upcoming projects. Are you working on anything specific or have plans in the pipeline?

Yes! “Minor Assassin” is my next novel. It’s currently in the editing phase and due to be released in October. Minor Assassin” is about an innocent boy who is forced into a dark world by tragedy. Trained by the most ruthless killers of Japan, he will take the law into his own hands. He will fight in the shadows to deliver justice, disrupting a human trafficking network. But if vengeance and anger consume him, will he ever find peace?
With young Jon in the middle, from the city of lights in Las Vegas to the villages of Japan, two underground worlds collide.

TimeLab: This story will have about 10 episodes and E01 will be released in September. The first episode will most likely be a give-away.

This is a rough synopsis:

A scientist from the past (The time of Cesar) close to 2500 years ago. Is branded a witch for trying to create the first real time machine in order to prevent war upon his people. But it is science and not witch craft! He test his machine on himself successfully before he gets arrested by the Kings guards. He lands in current day San Francisco California. He meets Kyle, the only person who barely saw him arrive. Kyle is one of the most talented physics and mathematics scientist in California. But he’s young, rich, and undisciplined. He drinks alcohol all the time and is the biggest ass whole in the world. Except he’s young and Brilliant when it comes to science. His theories about time travel have made him many enemies in the scientific community.

Together, the younger man Kyle will eventually work with the man from the past and build the ultimate time machine in order to get the older man home, back to the past while also prove to the world that time travel can happen. Old scientific theories met with Kyle’s newer scientific theories make them the ultimate team of scientist in “TimeLab”

Finally, are there any nuggets of wisdom that you can impart to other aspiring writers and musicians?

When it comes to writing: Think small and not big. Focus on writing just a little every day. With that small habit you’ll find yourself building stories in no time! Just think of the first 500 words. Or even the first paragraph. But stick to it every day. Some days you’ll come up empty. Other days you’ll find yourself writing for hours! Don’t forget to read similar books like the one you’re writing.

Musicians: If you love making music then you should practice every day! If you’re a composer, then you should be listening to your favourite composers all the time! As an instrumentalist you should be listening to your favourite artist in order to develop a good concept of tone quality and sound. If you want to earn a living as an artist, then you need to get my book!
