Poem / Poetry – “Chasing Her Eclipse”

Welcome one and all.

The distinguished realm of TooFullToWrite would like to offer up the official prompt for NaPoWriMo Day 5 (yes I know I am behind but I hope to catch up by the end of the week if you don’t mind!):-

NaPoWriMo.net – 30 Poems In 30 Days – Day 5

The prompt for Day 5 was to take a poem by Emily Dickinson, strip out all of the dashes and then mince the thing up and fashion it into your own Frankenstein’s monster. At least that’s what I think the brief was but I was too busy surfing for videos of dogs on skateboards, so if I’m wrong then I guess you’ll just have to sue me. And if that’s your game then don’t forget your shoes on the way out!

Still with me? Marvellous!

Now, it would appear that Emily Dickinson was a busy little bee, a busy little bee was she and she had so many poems up her sleeves to choose from that our hero decided to take a random two of ’em and mash ’em up real good! Here are the original poems by Emily that I picked out from her vast collection to make my one:-

A Saucer Holds A Cup
Although I Put Away His Life

Here we go then, let’s see what madness comes out of this – feel free to leave comments below and let me know what your favourite Emily Dickinson poem is – a remarkable woman that lady for sure.

“Chasing Her Eclipse” by David Ellis

Convicted we could be
Of playing our chosen tune
How sordid are life’s demands
The world will have its own

I may take this promise
Your Servant will become a King
The Queen will teach me paradise
With lips of earnest flames

I would never let her go
Leaping close to her side like
A possessed squirrel
Although, a flower deserves a preferred path
Akin to a saucer holding a cup

Chasing the eclipse has taught me
Not to dwell on the minutiae
But they say that dust sticks
Even if the pebble is pushed away

Would you play Hide & Seek
If you knew the surgeon will not come
This might have been the hand
That smoothed a homely pain

It is sweeter to obey
Than to chase the bee with the honey
But bear the brunt of this errand
And know a tree may ultimately blossom
To teach you a lesson
That everyone has a chance
Even the smallest citizen
If you use your loaf
And make that promise to her in advance

You want even more? Well you’ve come to the right place! For more NaPoWriMo madness, click on the links of the poems provided by the lovely ladies and fine fellows below.
