Day Eighteen – NanoPoblano – Poem/Poetry – “Jabberwockies” by David Ellis

Hello to you my loyal friends, fans and perpetrators of the poetic verse, welcome!

It’s Day Eighteen of NanoPoblano AKA National Blog Posting Month (but with a ragtag group of Cheer Peppers, who are even better than the A-Team! Let’s call them the P-Team…actually, let’s not call them that for posterity purposes, they will all thank me later) and I’m back with yet another video to give you all a visual thrill! (or make you ill – I sincerely hope it’s the former and not the latter).

Also, you are in luck because it is my longest video to date (perhaps not so lucky) and includes 2 for the price of 1! (OK, lucky again 😉 )

Check out the Facebook Live performance of my latest poem.

The inspiration for this particular poem came about from my original experimentation into the realms of Anagrammatic poetry (which I found out about via Robert Lee Brewer at Writer’s Digest) and also from a prompt on the napowrimo.net website, which was good, I acknowledged it but ultimately ignored it then went my own way.

Funnily enough, the prompt over there mentioned the Lewis Carroll poem “Jabberwocky” from his novel “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There”. I did not pay much attention to it at the time, until after I started brainstorming words to plug into my anagrammatic poem.

After reluctantly rejecting ‘jazzinesses’ (I could be tempted to revisit that one quite easily, let me tell you), a random word generator came up with ‘jabberwockies’ right next to jazzinesses when I asked it for an eleven letter random word (which explains why I miscounted the number of letters in the video, I may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don’t let that fool you, I really am an idiot but I can still count).

I then thought “Blimey! This is fate! Can’t ignore the fickle hand of fate, I’m being guided by the ghost of Lewis Carroll!” I nearly started frothing at the mouth but then I calmed down enough to start the monumental task of compiling this poem over many hours across a couple of days.

It wasn’t easy but I did it! I hope I managed to pull all the threads together and that you enjoyed it (or will enjoy it in a minute, if you are going to read the lyrics instead and have shunned the actual video like it is a hot potato).

If you would like some other alternative poetry prompts to help you write your way through the month (because let’s face it, Anagrammatic poetry is fun but also a right royal pain in the proverbial glasshole) then why not give these prompts a spin around the block and see how far that you get with them before someone calls the police to reign you back in:-

And (finally) here is the poem in written form, which might make more or less sense depending on how much you have been drinking 🙂

“Jabberwockies” by David Ellis (An Anagrammatic poem)

Bisk, a okra braise, crab, rice
A soiree
Beware, basic jibber jabber
Jocks jibe, jerks jeer, jokers, cobras, bores, jabberwockies!
I absorb ire, as care ceases
Bribe a cabbie, race a biker crew, we’re back, bars, corks, brews, jars
……………
Awoke, arose sore, worse wear, cobwebs, weak, raw, sick
Wore robes, a sock is askew
Seek brisk air, soak brow
Cobwebs ebb

So, I ask – Are aerobics worse sober?
Risk back? Screw abs!
Carbs are cosier
Cake, beer, brie, Rioja, kebabs, ribs, Cokes, rejoice!
Obese? Braces break! We croak easier as we’re weaker

Work? A scribe, Erica’s Bakeries
A car? A wackier joke, as cabs easier, wiser
Saw skiwear. Ice! Eek! Rocks? Ow! Break back or arse!
O! I swore! See rabbis sob, cower
I browse IKEA, acres woks, rakes, racks, wires…beakers
Babies bicker, cries, cribs reek, sewer, ew!
Cease! Ciao babies, we’re back, base
Resoak, bikers, bars, corks, brews, jars!
…………….
Reawoke, raw, weak, sick
Askew jaws, cries
We…..are….wrecks, babies, jocks…..ascribe….as….jabberwockies!

Did that make any sense? Did it appear to be the ramblings of a man perpetually teeter-tottering between the worlds of inebriation and sobriety, brilliance and insanity? It did? Excellent, that’s what I was aiming for, I guess my job here is done!

Oh yes, as I mentioned earlier and in the video itself, there was a bonus poem that I read, so I might as well share the lyrics for that one with you all also because I’m such a nice, friendly guy 😉 Behold, my first foray into Anagrammatic poetry!

  1. These seem like absolute beasts to try to create! So, if I’m understanding correctly, you pick a word and then you have to create a poem using only words that can be created using the letters that make up the word you picked?
I might have to torture myse- I mean, try my hand at this form at some point… 😉

  2. Delicious! This is a fab manifesto:
So, I ask – Are aerobics worse sober?
    Risk back? Screw abs!
    Carbs are cosier
Cake, beer, brie, Rioja, kebabs, ribs, Cokes, rejoice!
Obese? Braces break! We croak easier as we’re weaker
